A journalist, who goes by the name of David Hutt, went to Nicaragua to observe the actions and daily routines of the homeless men, women, and children, and he made these observations:

Hurricane Mitch, which occurred in 1998, was at the time the strongest Atlantic hurricane observed and had hit Nicaragua leaving nearly 11,000 people dead and over 11,000 people missing by the end of that year. Roughly 2.7 million were left homeless and there was an estimated $6 billion dollars worth of damage. This has since been named the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history, and was the first huge devastation that put Nicaragua into the ground.
- Homelessness is generally caused by five things: being born into poverty, a lack of an education, physical or sexual abuse (usually suffered as a child), unemployment and mental illness.
- Drug and alcohol dependency are other contributing factors, but these are generally caused by one of the five things mentioned above.
- It is very common to see many of the men and women walking around with sacks collecting plastic and glass bottles for recycling.
- A homeless Nicaraguan walks around far more than not only the average Nicaraguan, but also any tourist that wonders the streets.
